"In the beginning was Coco, and Coco was fashion, and Coco said to the multitude, fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.

And the clothes that were elegant were the garments made by Coco, who is Chanel. The cardigans, belted and unbelted, the cardigan coat and day dress, the day dress in beige jersey, the black jersey two-piece evening dress, the evening dresses in white silk net and black Chantilly lace, and in red silk also, to be worn with shoes of red silk and gold piping.

And the suit of tweed, herringbone, or bouclé, with edgings of contrasting jersey or braid, and the quilted lining of silk, and the blouse of silk that matches the lining, and the skirt that is neither long nor short, but perfect in the eyes of the stylish.

And inside the garments made by Coco, who is Chanel, all is beautiful, a sight to behold, because elegance means a thing's as beautiful on the wrong side as on the right, and luxurious is a garment that is pretty whether it is buttoned or unbuttoned.

And then Coco, who is Chanel, said art is imperfection, disorder is the symbol of luxury. But the garments that issued from the palace at Cambon were perfect in the eyes of all who had eyes to see them, and the multitude declared Coco a great artist, and she said, you do not understand, I am a dressmaker."

I'm pretty determined that my interests in life won't be cut off at the knees by a lazy inability to appreciate the "static arts." So I'm going to start haunting the museums in this town, and let what will bubble up bubble up. Today I learned a little bit about the Dadaists, and Surrealism, and rayographs, and shadows and light and la main, and a man who tried, in a way, to build a life by hiding behind his. Also: Paris! That was the key, a string I can build from; starting from Paris might be my ticket inside after all. And you know what? I went slowly, and it went well.

"Wake up, old man! She's trying to get me on that roller coaster."

Nothing in TV land beats the genius of this freakin' kid on Modern Family. He is the very ne plus ultra of actor + role.

Let's try this again.

I come here with a firm resolve not to blog by complaint. It's so easy, isn't it? Grumpiness. So autopilot. And my level of complaining—the weather? A woman I used to work with in Chicago was killed in her own home along with her husband and youngest son earlier this week, three lives undone just like that, and over what? How do you know? Whatever it was, it will never be worth it. So I don't even know what complaining is anymore. I know what a dark day is, but I will not bring it here. The world doesn't need more of my shadows on it, not the kind that last.

Anything could happen, but only one thing will.

This morning I was taking a package to the UPS around the corner (spring returns!) and some dude shouted "Hey lady!" as I passed him. The package was heavy, I kept going. "Hey lady!" he called again. "You dropped something!" So I stopped with this huge box of shoes in my arms and turned around to look, and he smiled and pointed down at the sidewalk and said, "Yeah, right there's where you dropped my heart." They're everywhere, these sidewalk Romeos. When I came back out of the store, one of them was helping an old woman—they're everywhere, too—pick up some packages that had fallen out of her shopping cart, he had set his own grocery bag down on the pavement and was stacking hers gingerly back in the cart for her, one by one. And for a couple of minutes the world was getting along fine.

Anyway, this was my lunch today, and I enjoyed the holy hell out of it.

</rss:item></rdf:RDF>
